The Nutshell Guide to Fluent English II : ESL Level: Intermediate

Description

This book is part of a series which aims to help English Language Learners to become fluent in Spoken English. The first in the planned series, it caters for those Learners who are ready to move up to the ESL (English as a Second Language) Intermediate level in Spoken English. Very often, English Language Learners at the Pre-Intermediate level are faced with two major difficulties. The first is that they have difficulty in understanding native English speakers who are speaking normally. The second is that they themselves are struggling to use more complex language structures fluently. There are two main reasons for this. The first is that native English speakers do not speak the language in the same way that they write it. The spoken word very often bears little or no resemblance to the written word. The second is that a Spoken language must be learnt - it cannot be taught. By this we mean that, while all learning is a two-way process between the instructor and the learner, when it comes to learning to speak a language, something more than 80% of the work must be done by the Learner on their own. One of the obvious areas where this is true is in the need to learn vocabulary. To become fluent in a spoken language, a great many new and more complex words must be learnt - and only the Learner can do that. The instructor cannot learn them for him. How that vocabulary is learnt is a large issue. By far, the vast majority of Learners try to do this by memorising list of English words and their equivalent meanings in their native language. This does not work, and it cannot work. It cannot work because it is an unnatural way in which to learn a language. It is also very boring, many, perhaps most, Learners have great difficulty in memorising, and being able to use, long lists of words and translations. In this book you will discover a new way to learn the vocabulary that you need, and how to make it fun to learn. The emphasis in this book is on practical use of the language. In each Unit, Learners are given the opportunity to extend their vocabulary and to practise speaking the language of the native speakers. The first section of each Unit is designed to focus on the elements of Pronunciation, Enunciation and Intonation when speaking English. The basics of each of these elements is described and explained as we progress through the Course. Great emphasis is laid, as it must be, on basic pronunciation of the Consonants that are found in English. The mechanisms of how these sounds are produced and illustrated and sets of minimal pairs are provided to allow the Language Learner to practise making these sounds and distinguishing between those that are closely related. Successfully reproducing the rhythm of English (Enunciation) is one of the main secrets of being able to speak the language fluently. In this book we describe how that rhythm is actually built up and how it works in practice. To do this, make use of some great English writings (and translations from the literature of other languages) to help the Learner to get a feel for the very beautiful cadences that English is capable of. This series has been two years in the making and most of the material in it has been extensively trialled in the classroom. In addition to the material in the book, a great deal of extra material, including audio files and links to other useful sites will be found on our website www.nutshellbooks.net.

Hutchins' University : A Memoir of the University of Chicago, 1929-1950

Description

The inauguration of Robert Maynard Hutchins as the fifth President of the University of Chicago in 1929 marked the beginning of an extraordinarily vibrant period for the university and for American higher education in general. That same year, William H. McNeill arrived at the university to pursue his education. Here, McNeill creates a vivid portrait of the institutional life of the university at that time, showing how both life on campus and in Hyde Park revolved around the charismatic figure of President Hutchins.

Alejandro Zambra,Megan McDowell: Multiple Choice

Multiple Choice

Description

"Multiple Choice" is unlike anything I ve ever encountered before. . . . Reading this book is a wonderfully disconcerting and unforgettable experience. Francisco Goldman, author of "Say Her Name" "" There is no writer like Alejandro Zambra, no one as bold, as subtle, as funny. "Multiple Choice" is his most accomplished work yet. This book is not to be missed. Daniel Alarcon, author of "At Night We Walk In Circles" A masterful, pioneering new work of fiction by Latin America s new literary star ("The New Yorker") The works of Alejandro Zambra, the most talked-about writer to come out of Chile since Bolano ("New York Times Book Review"), are distinguished by their striking originality, their brevity, their strangeness, and their flouting of narrative convention. Now, at the height of his powers, Zambra returns with a book that is the natural extension of these qualities: "Multiple Choice." Written in the form of a standardized test, "Multiple Choice" invites the reader to complete virtuoso language exercises and engage with short narrative passages via multiple-choice questions that are thought-provoking, usually unanswerable, and often absurd. It offers a new kind of reading experience, one where the reader participates directly in the creation of meaning. Full of humor, melancholy, and anger, "Multiple Choice" is about love and family; privacy and the limits of closeness; how a society is affected by the legacies of the past; and the conviction that, rather than learning to think, we are trained to obey and repeat. Serious in its literary ambition but playful in its execution, "Multiple Choice" confirms Alejandro Zambra as one of the most important writers working in any language."

What do our clothes say about who we are or who we think we are? How does the way we dress communicate messages about our identity? Is the desire to be "in fashion" universal, or is it unique to Western culture? How do fashions change? These are just a few of the intriguing questions Fred Davis sets out to answer in this provocative look at what we do with our clothes--and what they can do to us. Much of what we assume to be individual preference, Davis shows, really reflects deeper social and cultural forces. Ours is an ambivalent social world, characterized by tensions over gender roles, social status, and the expression of sexuality. Predicting what people will wear becomes a risky gamble when the link between private Multiple Choice download book self and public persona can be so unstable. This book gives teachers a thorough grounding in current ideas about the theory and practice of English language teaching. However much experience you have as a teacher, it can help you to develop professionally. It does this by encouraging you to think about the many possibilities and challenges that ELT methodology presents, and then apply these insights to your own teaching.

The White Cat and the Monk: A Retelling of the Poem 'Pangur Ban'

Description

An enchanting retelling of a classic Old Irish poem, brought beautifully to life by the award-winning Sydney Smith, illustrator of Footpath Flowers. From the illustrator of Footpath Flowers, Sydney Smith, and award-winning author, Jo Ellen Bogart, comes a retelling of the classic Old Irish poem, 'Pangur Ban' - the poem that inspired the character of Pangur Ban in the Academy Award nominated animation, The Secret of Kells. The monk in the poem leads a simple life - he studies his books late into the evening, searching for meaning. His cat, Pangur, leads a simple life, too, chasing his prey in the darkness. But as night turns to dawn, can each find what he seeks? Thoughtful readers will be enchanted by this elegant, classically-inspired story which pays tribute to the wisdom of animals and the wonders of the natural world.

A book comes along like this once in a lifetime. You read it as a small child, or even an adult, and never forget the images it conjures up of a wonderful Englishman who lives in The White Cat and the Monk: A Retelling of the Poem 'Pangur Ban' free ebook the mysterious forests of faraway Burma and of the kind native people who teach him about their lovely country. But most of all, you never forget the elephants! For this is a story about those magnificent creatures. Though he was officially known as Lt. Colonel J. H. Williams, the author was known to the world at large as Elephant Bill. That is because he spent 25 years living with the elephants in the mountains and forests of Burma. There he trained them to haul teak logs out of the isolated jungles. Yet this is also a story of great courage, because when the Second World War struck it also came to Burma. The Japanese Imperial Army planned to confiscate the Burmese elephants, drafting them to make the bridges and railways they needed to invade India. When he learned of these plans to put his beloved animals to a war-like purpose, Elephant Bill knew what had to be done. The mighty kings of the jungle had to be evacuated to safety. This is thus the story not only of the peaceful days in the jungle, starting in 1921, but also the story of the largest elephant rescue in history. It tells the amazing account of how Elephant Bill, along with his friends and family, rode 45 of the great beasts across the mountains of Burma, before reaching safety in faraway India. A classic then. A classic now. Elephant Bill is a blessing to any library and a literary treasure.

Yoga Meditation: Through Mantra, Chakras and Kundalini to Spiritual Freedom pdf

Maehle Gregor: Yoga Meditation: Through Mantra, Chakras and Kundalini to Spiritual Freedom

Yoga Meditation: Through Mantra, Chakras and Kundalini to Spiritual Freedom

Description

This book will not only give a precise step-by-step description of the meditation technique at the heart of yoga but also put it into context with all other yogic techniques and how they contribute to the breakthrough to spiritual freedom. Yogic meditation derives its power from the fact that it systematically suspends the entire processing capacity of the subconscious mind and diverts it towards meditation. The processing power of the subconscious mind is a multiple of that of the conscious mind. Simply watching breath or watching awareness involves only your conscious mind. For quick and effective concentration the entire power of the subconscious mind has to be harnessed. This is the secret of yogic meditation. You will also find information on the importance of Kundalini as support for meditation and the factors that make it rise, such as chakra and Sushumna visualization, mantra and breath. The text then explains how the chakras represent evolutionary stages of brain and mind development. Chakra meditation, if done in a sophisticated, high-powered way, will propel the evolution of the brain and mind of the practitioner and the awakening of higher intelligence.

Stephen Frey: The Chairman

The Chairman

Description

No one knows the dark side of The Street better than master storyteller Stephen Frey, author of such riveting novels as Shadow Account and The Day Trader. Now, in his most ambitious work to date, Frey proves that no writer can put a high-powered hero at greater risk, nor offer readers more thrilling rewards. A towering legend among New York private equity partnerships, Everest Capital is aptly named. When its founder meets an untimely death, thirty-six-year-old superstar Christian Gillette gets the top job. But with the power and prestige come risks. The day he narrowly escapes a fiery explosion that consumes his limo and takes two innocent lives, Gillette instantly understands how intense those risks are. It comes as no surprise to him that he has enemies in the world of multibillion dollar deals. But now that he controls Everest, he s not going to let those enemies keep him from taking the firm and himself to even greater heights. Gillette has never hesitated to be aggressive, even ruthless, in his pursuit of success. This time will be no exception. But in order to forge the alliances necessary to achieve his goals, Gillette forsakes a cardinal rule: Never trust anyone. The only certainties are the insidious campaign of corporate sabotage that could cost Gillette his job and the relentless assassination attempts that could cost him his life. To break a deadly conspiracy of greed, he ll be forced to walk then run an ever-blurring line between loyalty and betrayal, attack and retreat, survival and destruction . . . in the ultimate game of profit and loss. With The Chairman, Stephen Frey presides with intensified skill over the market he has so dramatically cornered sharpening his patented brand of hard-boiled high-finance intrigue to its keenest cutting edge yet. "From the Hardcover edition.""
